Favorite Places, Creative Spaces

Not long ago I mentioned that I was having a bit of writer’s block. After a moment of reflection, I realized that there’s just a lot going on in my life right now professionally and personally.  Time and creative energy to write have been on low supply….until now.

I ran across a blog that offered some direction to at least keep me writing. Tiana Lopez’s blog, Zealous Scripts, has a section dedicated to writing prompts. I thought I’d take a stab at a few of them – at least get a paragraph or two out. So, for the next few weeks, I’ll post some of my content based on these. Great minds think alike…or do they???

Have you ever had an idea or story that you felt was so unique that nobody else in the world could ever come up with the same thing? And then you see your idea on a store shelf or used as a storyline in a TV show or movie only to feel like somebody had to be looking inside your head.  What a bummer?

I keep a notebook for invention ideas and use other tools for story ideas, but I swear someone is peeking sometimes.   Sometimes it feels like a “doh!” moment, and other times a near crashing blow.  Regardless, I’m pressing on.  Eventually something will pan out.  🙂

Writing and Love, it’s About Control

Truer words have never been spoken, Millie.  Many writers, and I do this as well sometimes, attempt to control the character because we have a set agenda on where the story should go.  But like reality, situations and lives can move in directions that we never expect.

Writing Tip: “Sense” Your Scenes

I have to agree with this post in so many ways.  Just because colorful words are used, they may not be structured or written in a way that helps the reader get a good feel for the scene or even the character.  This can leave an otherwise great story, limp and lifeless – like Ben Stein’s character from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

What I appreciate from this post are the questions and insight provided to help writers create more sensory scenes – the type that engage reader’s 5 senses and can provoke thoughts.  I’ve always loved books and movies that could do this.

I try to read a book a week; it’s usually on a Saturday, when I have time to sit down and read a good chunk at a time.  This past weekend I read a book which prompted thoughts around this concept of “sensing” a scene, and reading it aloud to hear any howlers that might have crept into the writing.  The author of that book obviously did neither, though her editor might have told her to beef up descriptives – so they were clumped all together, staggering me as a reader to a halt while I tried to figure out the context of the pages of descriptives before remembering what the characters were doing there in the first place, and often the dialogue sounded very stilted (e.g. using “vocalized” instead of “shouted” – the latter of the two would have fit into the character’s time and place far better) – a…

Writer’s Block or Something Else???

Right now my brain feels as empty as the bubble above the lady’s head in the picture.   Well, maybe my head isn’t empty, per se.  🙂 I’m just having a moment of writer’s block.  I’ll have an idea and begin to write something, but it doesn’t make sense or there’s no where for me to go next.  I thought about just posting a collaboration of my illiterate ramblings, but don’t want to embarrass myself.

I will admit that there is a lot going on right now in my personal life, so it is possible that my brain is just overloaded to where it cannot connect the dots.  So, while I get over this issue of creativity I thought for the month of August I’d post tips about writer’s block from other wonderful authors and bloggers from WordPress.  Enjoy!
